Yes, I’m a geezer that listens to rock music and still buys CDs. I download them into my computer and iPod, but I prefer to check out the liner notes and have a back-up copy if my hard drive crashes. The year of 2007 was solid for hard rock and metal releases. In fact there is so much music out there these days, it’s difficult to listen to enough of it. Of the new discs I did spin last year, these are the records that stood out.
1. Sebastian Bach: Angel Down
The ex-Skid Row screamer delivers a worthy follow-up to Slave to the Grind.
2. Scorpions: Humanity Hour 1
A fresh, modern approach that still rings with the classic Scorps sound.
3. Jon Oliva’s Pain: Maniacal Renderings
If you like Savatage, you have to check out JOP. This disc features a few songs based on old Criss Oliva riffs.
4. Sixx A.M.: The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack
Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx scores his latest book with a modern-rock vibe.
5. Dirty Penny: Take It Sleezy
This is group of 20-somethings from NorCal blast out tunes straight out of the late-’80s Sunset Strip.
6. Megadeth: United Abominations
Dave Mustaine’s revitalized ‘Deth cranks it up just like the old days.
7. Lillian Axe: Waters Rising
With only original guitarist Stevie Blaze in the fold, the Axe still sounds sharp.
8. Crash Diet: The Unattractive Revolution
Rebounding from the death of its original singer, Crash Diet offers retro sleaze with big production.
9. Night Ranger: Hole In The Sun
Bet you didn’t know these guys were still around.
10. Black Sabbath: The Dio Years
Only three new tunes, but it’s great to hear Ronnie Dio fronting Sabbath.
If you hate ‘em or don’t care about ‘em, feel free to post your own lists. If you like this style of music, go buy some and keep these artists around, as there’s nothing like driving fast and cranking your favorite tunes!
Don’t worry, I’ll get back to ’Stang posts tomorrow.
Happy New Year!
