If you live on the West Coast and you haven't gone to a Pacific Street Car Association (www.pscaracing.com) event yet, what in the world is your problem?! I recently joined the fun...and brought home a little hardware, too.
For those of you who think "there's noplace to race" Mustangs in SoCal, think again! Ford Racing Performance Parts' "Mustang Maddness" is the hot ticket for West Coast 'Stangbangers. The Open Comp-formatted (think, "pro-tree bracket racing, with a one-tenth breakout allowance") category is the latest addition to the PSCA's lineup, and based on the strong showing of 'Stangs at the association's recent California Nationals event at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, it looks like the Maddness will continue for a long time to come. Your tech editor and 25 other hard-core 'Stang racers converged on Fontana for two days (qualifying and eliminations) of wide-open action in the blazing Southern California sun. It would be great if I could say that I emerged victorious after five rounds of racing, but it wasn't to be. My late reaction time and my ride's off-pace performance (Jose Ybarra's bone-stock '03 Mach 1, had fallen off its 14.35 index by .3 due to hot-lapping that was done in the later rounds) left me settling for a runner-up finish. Dan "Killer Lights" Marciano earned his second win of the season. Congrats once again to Dan, and to all of the 'Stang nuts who came out to race, nice job!
