Shelby GT500 KR Power Test

That's Right, Boys, We Put "The King" on the Dyno

A blip of the throttle and dump of the clutch are all that's needed for long, smoky burnouts with a KR.

It's amazing how quickly time passes when you really are "having fun." My week with Ford's 2008 Shelby GT500 KR Mustang has been awesome. Unfortunately, though, the car's handlers will pick it up today and prepare it for the next lucky magazine guy's opportunity to check it out. One thing I have to say before handing over "The King" is, while I'm not sure how other editors (Motor Trend and Mustang Monthly had the KR before I got it, and I have no idea "who's next") tested this bad-ass 'Stang, I certainly put the car through its paces--on the street, on the simulated dragstrip, and, on the chassis dyno--and gained a lot of respect for the very expensive ($80,000 sticker, plus however many Gs the dealers are tacking on), limited-edition Shelby. With only 1,500 KRs in the production plan, "The King" is sure to be more of a collector's item than standard Shelby GT500s are, and even though the modify maniac in me says, "change this, add that and make it even better," I guess I can ultimately be a little more understanding about not doing anything to a KR, and simply letting it be the King of the Road that Ford...and Carroll Shelby want it to be.

509.0 horses run wild, right here at
Although the KR shares the same engine as standard Shelby GT500s, it pumps out 40 more horsepower at the crank. We're more concerned with rear-wheel horses, and what must be a tuning difference makes this version of the supercharged 5.4 rock much harder.
We used a G-Tech Pro RR performance meter to calculate the KR's quarter-mile time. Basically, it's a 10-second Mustang in bone-stock trim.
This carbon-fiber splitter at the front of the KR is a cool treatment, but knowing it's there will rattle your nerves when exiting driveways!
We dig the KR's front-brake cooling system. Cold air runs through tubing from the lower grill and straight into a trick backing plate to cool down the big Brembos.
We put the car up on the rack at Extreme Automotive to examine its underpinnings, which include upgraded shocks, springs and struts that give the KR a firm, sportier feel than standard GT500s.

Editor steve Turner gives an in-depth overview of what the KR is all about in an upcoming issue of 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords. However, for this Blog report, not only did I just drive the KR around town, I had a chance to put it in the air and really check it out on the bottom side, give it a good workout on the Dynapack Evolution 4000 chassis dyno at Extreme Automotive, and I also got a good ballpark idea of how quickly "The King" can cover the quarter-mile, thanks to a G-Tech Pro RR performance meter.

If you think like we do, and agree that horsepower at the rear wheels should be acknowledged as the "horsepower of record" for a performance Mustang, the "500" part of this Shelby's name is legit. The KR put down one huge blast (509.0 hp/467.7 lb-ft) after we locked it down on the dyno, and supported its ability with subsequent hits of 498 horsepower but with a bit lower torque as the supercharger quickly gave in to heat soak. Also, Ford had the rev limiter locked in at 6,100 rpm on the test KR, so I imagine that 509 might be considerably better with more revs.

It's definitely not hard to literally run out of street with the Shelby GT500 KR. The 'Stang pulls hard and accelerates very, very quickly (.382g on the G-Tech Pro RR), and we calculated its quarter-mile e.t. would be in the mid-11-second range in full street trim. Of course, that's allowing for tires that will surely spin a bit at launch and between shifts. In the perfect world, "The King" is a 10-second Mustang you can buy from a dealer.

I dig the stiffer chassis and high(er)-performance suspension the KR has, its lowered body, unique exhaust note (and chrome tips), and definitely the carbon-fiber/air-grabbing hood and carbon-fiber front air dam--aka "splitter." All are very cool differences that set KRs apart from the standard GT500s, and also gives a throwback-type acknowledgement to Carroll Shelby's original super 'Stang.

Here is the dyno data for those of you who need to see it and follow the link to see video of the car making a dyno run. The dyno doesn't lie. Shelby GT500 KR definitely is "the truth."
