We have a new guest blogger here to give us a behind the scenes look a the Mustang Challenge series. Allow me to introduce Mr. Jamie Slone...
I currently sit 2nd in points in the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup, just 15 behind Andrew Caddell. We drive the new Ford Racing Mustang FR500S and I won the last (third) race of the series and now we are competing in round 4 at Barber here in Birmingham, Alabama this weekend. I guess by winning the race at Mid-Ohio last month I awoke a giant. Stable One who has four cars in the series has hired Andrew Caddell away from another team to drive with them and win the championship. Their cars have speed on the straights and all the competitors know it so with Andrew in one it should be a walk in the park for them. But wait there’s more, they have hired the big time Sports Car Pro Racer Terry Borcheller to come race this weekend. I guess that is a compliment to me that they are concerned about wining this race and want to increase their chances. Maybe I will get lucky and “steal the show” again like I did at Mid Ohio. If not, I will have a lot of fun trying.
Today was a promoter test day and we got to drive three different times. It was hot and track temps were above 130 degrees and it made it real greasy. Terry Borcheller has yet to arrive so in first session Andrew got P1 and in second session I was P1. The last session of the day Andrew was first again and I fell to fourth. My car is pushing real bad and I am having trouble getting the power down. I figure out how to get this fixed before qualifying and I will give him a run for his money I promise. Good news is that I still ran the second fastest time of the day! Friday we have two practice sessions, Saturday we qualify and Sunday we race at 1 p.m. Alabama time. You can follow the action by going to www.millercup.com and clicking on live timing and scoring!
When Terry Borcheller shows up today I am sure things will change. We’ll finally get to see how a real pro can get er done with this Mustang FR500S that’s for sure. I am excited to run against him and see how well I can do. Might as well make the best of it eh? If you are not familiar with Terry he has six National Championships under his belt, has won the Rolex Daytona 24 hours twice and has made a podium at the 24 hours of Leman in France and yes he’s driving in our little ol’ Mustang Challenge race. Cool!
Imagine what would happen if Andrew Caddell lost this race and what if I beat Terry Borcheller? Yikes…. Too much fun thinking about it. Talk to ya soon.—Jamie Slone (www.sloneracing.com)
