We're pretty sure that those of you who have followed sanctioned, heads-up Mustang drag racing for as long as it has existed (the NMRA is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and Fun Ford Weekend has been around even longer than that) know that when the name, "Big Daddy," is mentioned, the person who has mentioned it is not referring to Don Garlits.
Sure, Don is the original "Bigs," but Dwayne Gutridge is the Big Daddy that hard-core 'Stangbangers are a lot more familiar with. In the Mustang world, Dwayne is considered by many to be the father of the wildly popular Drag Radial class, and has achieved many landmark drag-radial performance records (first in the 9s, first in the 7s) with his turbocharged notchback Fox. Big Daddy's 'Stang has been out of the scene for more than two years and maybe you've been wondering why. I'll clue you in after the jump...
Having achieved so many milestones with drag radials, Big Daddy has a new mission: "I want to be the first to go 6 seconds (at over 200 mph) on drag radials, in a Mustang with a stock-style rear suspension," Dwayne says. And to do it, his black Fox is currently being revamped with a self-built, twin-turbocharged, small-block Ford engine (392ci) and Wolfe Racecraft's 25.2 roll-cage upgrade, installed by Joe Gambino.
We were treated to a look at Big Daddy's work-in-progress during our tech stop at Big Daddy Performance, Dwayne's Lakewood, New Jersey, shop. Six seconds on a drag-radial tire? While the idea officially qualifies as being "beyond sick," there's no doubt that Big Daddy Dwayne Gutridge is the guy who can pull off doing it before anyone else does!
