We’re heading to Columbus, OH to check ¼-mile speeds

As the 2008 NMRA season heads down the stretch, the Columbus, OH stop promises to be a big one. I love National Trail Raceway, and its surroundings, even though they make me sneeze. Oh well, I’ll have to load up on the Claritin to keep from sneezing my head off. This year I’ll also try to fall over the concrete barriers, too. I took a bad tumble over the barrier a couple years ago. Thankfully, only a few saw that stunt; and no one caught it on film so technically it never happened. Find out why I am excited to attend the NMRA Columbus race after the jump…

First of all, Columbus, OH is a pretty cool city. I wouldn’t want to live there because of the winters, but there’s a ton of stuff to do since it’s a college town. The weather is usually really nice when the NMRA comes to town, and in checking www.weather.com it looks like more of the same for Saturday and Sunday. And frankly, National Trail Raceway is one of my favorite tracks because of its paved pits and spacious acreage for which to shoot feature cars.

National Trail is also one of the stickier tracks on the NMRA circuit, which means we get plenty of chances to shoot wheels-up action. The slick cars are usually very quick off the line, but the opposite is in affect for the drag radial cars. They usually have their hands full at National Trail with getting the drag radials to bite. However, the drag radial guys usually have it figured out by the end of qualifying, and with Columbus’ usual cool weather, National Trail is usually one of the faster tracks, as well.

As most of you know, the NMRA drama has been at an all-time high lately. A few racers have gotten in trouble, and their suspensions have an effect on each of their respective classes. All you have to do is go to the NMRA Web site to get the details, but suffice it to say, the Columbus race is going to be an interesting one. I’ll see you there.
