Oil Containment

DJ Safety's Fox-Specific Engine Diapers Help Keep Oil Off the Track

If someone was to take a survey on "Situations that Drag Racers Never Want to Be In While They're Racing," I'd bet good money that "catastrophic engine failure and spilling oil at top speed" would be one of the top vote getters.

I've seen drivers lose all control of their Mustangs when the back tires start spinning on crude rushing out of a windowed block, and the damage that is the unfortunate (and usually pretty expensive) result.

The NHRA and many other drag racing sanctions such as the PSCA here on the West Coast, are now mandating oil-containment devices (affectionately referred to as "engine diapers") for cars that run in the 9s. I think the diapers are a great idea for ANY high-horsepower drag car, especially 'Stangs, of course, and I'm working with the good dudes at DJ Safety Equipment, Orme Brothers and A.R.E. Performance and Machine to make sure that Project Boss 340 has a diaper between the pan and the dragstrip, before we start racing later this year.

Want to put an engine diaper on your Fox 'Stang? Head on over the jump and find out where to get one...

Following the announcement of NHRA's new tech rule on oil-containment devices for 9-second cars (see www.NHRA.com for more info), DJ Safety Equipment of Los Angeles, California, immediately went into action. The company has developed diapers for 302 and 351-based Ford engines (and 4.6-Liter modulars, too), and thanks to Joel Orme and Rocco Acerrio (who provided a slew of Fox-body/SBF front-sump oil pans--including Boss 340's aluminum Canton race pan), has tailored the devices for perfect fitment in '79-'93 Mustangs!

I'll talk more about DJ's Fox-body engine diapers (in the magazine, of course) when we fit Boss 340 (the engine) into Boss 340 (the car) very soon. In the meantime, I know a lot of you NMRA and PSCA Mustang racers are getting ready to start the 2009 season and can use immediate info, so give Orme Brothers (ask for Joel Orme) a call at (818) 885-1414, to find out the technical details about the devices, and more importantly how to order one for your 'Stang!
