Acquiring New Race Equipment Always Gets Me Gassed

Well, with the rain pretty much ruining a day at the track (NHRA Winternationals at Pomona) for me on Friday, I had to find something to do to keep my mind occupied. So, during a little break in the weather that brought about a short sunburst, I took delivery of our latest piece of race-support equipment.

So, after the jump, feast your eyes on KJ JONES Racing's (and 5.0's) "new (used, but, new to us)" pit vehicle...


Green now, but look for this baby to have a vinyl wrap that matches the graphics we put on Boss 340. It's gonna be bad-ass!
The golf cart's engine is a two-stroke deal (self-mixing) and runs strong and smootly. An oil leak of some sort is the only real issue, but it's just a drip...nothing of Exxon-Valdez proportions.
The jury is still out on the golf cart's "four by" suspension setup, but the ride is pretty comfy, so it might remain as it is.
The pickup bed is removable...and WAY cool!
After checking out the latest acquisition, I parked it in the box unitl I have time to figure out how it has to be loaded and tied down when we go racing.
We're using AnchorTrax to tie the cart down inside the trailer. The devices have a 3,000-pound break strength, which is more than enough to keep the cart in place when we're headed to or from the track.
Scooters and bicycles also are convenient methods of getting around at the track. These units will be in semi-retirement now that we've got a golf cart.

Traveling by golf cart (gas-powered or electric/battery-operated) has long been racers' and crew members' preferred method of getting around the dragstrip, when they're not making passes down the quarter-mile. I've always marveled at the creativity and straight-out, "pimpnology" that go into these pit vehicles (booming stereos, blingin' wheels...remember the high-revving, snowmobile-engine-powered wagon that the Donnie Walsh Jr crew had?), and wondered what I would do, if or whenever I had a golf cart for my racing operation.

Well, Project Boss 340 really is becoming the racing shot-in-the-arm that I've needed for a long while.  Sure, I've driven and raced many different 'Stangs on the dragstrip and even done well in them, and, I have the awesome privilege of being able to attend NMRA events each year and see some of the baddest race Mustangs on the planet, but, it has been about 7 years since I've actually owned a full-on, drag-race-only Mustang. This comeback, through Boss 340 has got me excited, and I guess I decided to step up our pitside game and get the cart...because it's just the thing you do when you step up your pitside game!

The new wagon needs a dash of TLC, but it was an obscenely murderous deal (aren't they all?) and, similar to the dreams I have for Project Boss 340, I've got "vision" on how I can make our cart something that will have us lookin' good and riding in style in the pits (gotta have things right for Big Steve, if he ever comes out to a PSCA event to see Boss 340 in action).

The cart is gas-powered, lifted, has a pickup bed for tools, fuel jugs, etc, and it really is in relatively good shape, despite the green paint (We're going to call on the experts at Catalyst Industrial Marking in Van Nuys, CA, to help us give the cart a new look. The CI team will be giving the race car its sinister graphics treatment). The whole setup should look cool when it's done (gotta add some beats, too). It's all about lookin' right as well as runnin' right...right?! Hah!

The former owner was cool enough to deliver it to the driveway, and I had the pics done and the cart stored in the trailer just as the rain returned! Sure, guys, I know that hard economic times are upon us. But when a can't-miss deal that will help your race program comes around, I guess there's always some way to capitalize on it!
