Well, I took my ’94 Cobra to Bradenton Motorsports Park this past Sunday for Runday Sunday. To recap, my Cobra has 3.73 gears, MAC shorty headers, a UPR X-pipe, Spintech mufflers, backyard tailpipes, and underdrive pulleys. Everything else is bone stock. I was utilizing street tires, and running in full street trim. Timing is at 10 degrees, and I had just under a ¼-tank of gas in the car. First of all, I had zero expectations of what the car would run. I have been underwhelmed when it’s come to this car’s quickness. I was simply hoping to establish a solid baseline from which to steadily improve. I am satisfied that I was able to do just that. Check out my day at the track after the jump…
First pass showed I was way out of practice as I missed 2nd gear. Who does that? LOL However, check out that reaction time. Ha And the MPH showed promise. R/T .004 60’ 2.311 1/8 10.277 Mph 72.25 ¼ 15.678 MPH 93.93 The next two passes I ran 14.9s at 92 mph. Both passes I ran 2.09 60ft times, which for my car I thought was really good. The only tuning trick I did throughout the day was remove the air filter. Doing so netted me this pass. R/T -.013 Whoops! 60’ 2.193 1/8 9.52 MPH 76.27 ¼ 14.684 MPH 98.04 Wow, look at that improvement! The filter was a little clogged. LOL On the next pass I was a little aggressive off the launch and spun the tires a bit too much on the way to a 14.81 at 97 mph. Judging by the 14.68 pass, and by the way that was Charlie Grandll’s guess as to what the car would run, it became my goal to run a .50-something. I knew the car had it in her, just wasn’t sure about the driver. LOL The next pass I was really aggressive on the shifting, but I have not powershifted the car because of my present clutch pedal/shifter arrangement. Plus, I wanted to focus on hitting my shifts this time around. I was more concerned with hitting my shifts rather than gaining a tenth or two by powershifting. It was getting warm outside (high 80s at least) so I knew I only had a couple more passes to get a .50. My next pass I missed 3rd when my hand slipped off the shifter going into 3rd. However, I regrouped and got it into 3rd and stayed in it. This was the result: 60’ 2.02 Best of the day 1/8 9.46 MPH 73.98 ¼ 14.706 MPH 94.81 I knew if the car would run a 14.70 missing 3rd gear, it definitely had a .50-something in it. With just a short cooldown time, I lined her up for one last banzai pass. I was either going to run a .50 or miss a gear trying. LOL However, with the help of a Subway napkin I hit my shifts and this was the result. 60’ 2.186 Not off to a good start. 1/8 9.421 Best of the day MPH 76.81 Best of the day ¼ 14.535 Best of the day MPH 98.90 Best of the day
With the .53 in hand I was content to call it a day. Though not stellar by any means, with my car having a million miles on it, I think this is a very good starting point. Items I already have to install on the car include a JLT cold air, a Mishimoto radiator from American Muscle, an AMP Performance aluminum flywheel, and a SPEC Stage 2 clutch. I will also get a new clutch cable, and hopefully, a new shifter as well with a pistol grip knob. Next time at the track I will be gunning for 13s. Wish me luck.
