As many of you know, I'm 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords magazine's West Coast staff member (I hold things down in our Los Angeles office).
Although the majority of my work is done here in Cali, I do get opportunities to make it across the country each year, to see Mustangs race in NMRA competition. When you're a hard-core 'Stangbanger like me, Big Steve and Mike Johnson, nothing beats the excitement of NMRA action.
However, here in the West, the Pacific Street Car Association (www.pscaracing.com) is my "home" sanctioning body for heads-up drag racing, and the Ford Racing Mustang Maddness class is the eliminator I follow--and participate in--whenever possible. Mustang Maddness, an Open Comp-format eliminator that's specifically for any-year, Ford-powered Mustangs, definitely is exciting in its own right, despite being a lot smaller than NMRA as a whole.
The PSCA recently kicked off its "California Season" with the Spring Break Super Show at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California. More than 30 racers, many of them newcomers, competed in Mustang Maddness.
Two particular newcomers caught my attention. Find out more about them after the jump...
Some of us have drag racing in our blood...almost literally. The two guys standing next to their '91 LX and GT-model 'Stangs certainly do, as they're the sons of NHRA Division 7 Stock Eliminator racer, John Calvert (the cat who piloted Brent Hayjek's 2008 Cobra Jet to a win in its inaugural race--the '09 NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, California).
Johnny (standing by the bone-stock, red GT), and Brent (with a Vortech-supercharged, gray LX) are both 18 years old. And as you can imagine, they're both long-time "veterans" of drag racing at this point (from tagging along with and helping their dad, and then racing their own junior dragsters from age 8 to 16).
Despite their experience, however, running in Ford Racing Mustang Maddness presented the Calvert brothers with their first opportunity to race on a .400 Pro Tree, and it proved to be quite a learning experience for both of them. "They're having a hard time adjusting to the Pro Tree, but this is a neat class," says dad.
To keep the playing field level for all-types of modified and stock Mustangs, qualifying for Ford Racing Mustang Maddness is based on reaction time. And, to give you an idea of how stout the competition is when it comes to qualifying, there are occasions where the Top 10 drivers on the ladder have scored .400s thru.409s at the 'tree. In par-for-the-course fashion--for twins--Brent and Johnny qualified right next to each other...with .517 and .521 reaction times, respectively.
I just thought it was kind of neat to see two brothers--twins--and young sons of a "famous Ford racer" of sorts (check out www.calvertracing.com for more info on Calvert Racing), out there mixing it up in the PSCA's Mustang Maddness class.
If you're in SoCal, Las Vegas or Arizona and want to do some drag racing with like-minded Mustang enthusiasts, check out the PSCA's Web site and find out when the next event is being held, and bring your Pony out to race!
