It's almost that time of year again, people. It's time to get your King of the Street applications in order, and sent to us. If you have a Mustang, or know of someone who should be in this competition, send us an application. you never know until you try. Check out more info after the jump...

American Muscle Sponsors King of the Street

Does your Mustang put down over 800 hp to the wheels? Does it idle like a hybrid? Can it run 9s on radials, and make a lunch run in air-conditioned comfort? Is your Mustang equally at home in the car show area as it is spinning the rollers? Is it ready to compete in 5.0 Mustang and Super Ford magazine’s King of the Street competition? If you read these questions answering a resounding “yes” to every one, now’s your chance to prove it!

The King of the Street is a spirited, fun competition that crowns the most streetably powerful ’Stang in the land. That means you get positive grades for an instant cold start, a stable idle, working A/C, a stylish interior, and a booming stereo. Meanwhile, we deduct grades for manual steering, a non-overdrive trannies, spools, faded paint, sloppy wiring, and even too many stock parts. As always, we are looking for the most beautiful, streetable, and drivable Mustang country.

There is something new for the King of the Street. A new sponsor! AmericanMuscle coming on board to help make the competition a success. AmericanMuscle is a natural fit as the KOTS sponsor since it sells products for ’79-’11 Mustangs. “Everyone at AmericanMuscle is thrilled by the opportunity to be sponsoring the top street Mustang competition of the year,” Andrew Voudouris, vice president of AmericanMuscle, said. “It’s a natural fit for us as a company, and a great opportunity to reach out to our loyal customer base in a fun, ‘bragging rights’ style of competition.” We look forward to working with AmericanMuscle to make the King of the Street a huge success.

How do you throw your Mustang into the hat? The first step is putting together an application package. 5.0&SF wants to see a few photos of the car (exterior, engine, and interior), a list of the car’s modifications, and examples of its accomplishments (dyno sheets, timeslips, etc.). From those stacks of cars, 5.0&SF will narrow it down to 10 or so lucky contestants to square off on the same day, same street, and same chassis dyno. 5.0&SF staff members critique your Mustang to see how well it measures up to KOTS standards. Then you’ll see if 5.0&SF Associate Editor Mike “The Splitter” Johnson can hit every gear behind the wheel of your Mustang.

Still not scared? Well, get those packages or emails together in a hurry. 5.0&SF needs your application by September 3rd, which is the Friday before Labor Day so you will have sufficient notice to make your travel plans. KOTS will take place Thursday September 30 and Friday October 1, in conjunction with the NMRA World Finals (www.nmraracing.com) in Bowling Green, Kentucky. So, even if you aren’t invited to participate, you can watch the event unfold at Beech Bend Raceway Park. Send your apps to: KOTS, 9036 Brittany Way, Tampa, FL 33619 or 5.0mailbag@sourceinterlink.com. —Michael Johnson
