DOH! Moments

Keep Your Cool, It Might Be the Fuel

While the Mustang hobby is awesome, a lot of fun, the best thing since sliced bread, etc, I'm pretty you've all had moments where your 'Stang has left you wondering whether it's too late to start investing all your time and money into something completely different.

You all know the saga of Project T-top Coupe; its triumphs (860+ rwhp/9-sec e.t., street driven, etc)...and the tragedies (two engine meltdowns) that I've had to overcome, and the fact that we're now closing in on hopefully seeing Couptie throw down ONE-THOUSAND (and hopefully a few extra) horsepower on the chassis dyno.

Exciting times, for sure. However, on Sunday, I almost had one of the worst panic attacks (brought about by the Coupe) that I've ever experienced. But, I also realized something I've known...and even suggested to others in "crisis" situations. Find out what that is, after the jump...

We've fed T-top Coupe a steady diet of VP Racing Fuel's MS109 fuel since the Mustang was first completed. We've just got to do better about knowing how much is in the tank!

It's the "cool head" that prevails! No doubt about it, when you keep emotions in check and think things out, most crises can be averted.

Case in point. If/when the engine in your trusty, beloved project Mustang/race car/cruiser/etc fails to start, ONE DAY after putting the car away with the engine showing absolutely NO sign or hint of having ANY critical problems whatsoever, don't panic! Don't start reaching for tools and plotting a course for major engine surgery. Just take a moment and think things out.

The "keep-your-cool" advice comes thanks to my experience on Sunday, when I went to start the coupe's engine so a friend could hear it. Now, understand, not even a full day earlier, I parked the car in the garage and all systems seemed to be perfect. But, on Sunday morning, all the engine did was spin and not engage--no matter what "tricks" I tried to get it to light.

Panic, right? Grab tools and tear it apart to find out what's wrong, right? This just has to be terminal/catastrophic, right? Wrong!

I admit, I almost "went there." Almost started getting ready to pull things apart...or just start strongly considering another hobby to pursue. Then I took a minute and thought about the engine's total run time since the first time it started a few weeks ago. Hmmm...

Are you guys already at the "DOH!" punchline, before I even say it? Yep, the car was just out of fuel.

Five gallons of VP MS109 later, T-top Coupe's bullet roared to life as soon as I hit the ignition!

Yes, it was a "DOH!" moment, for sure!
